Bay Area Leadership Program Service Project

bay san fran lp gemmaAkara Draper, a participant in the Bay LP, enrolled the Bay LP community into contributing to Gemma, a transitional home for women being released from prison. These women often come out with no money, nowhere to live, and little or no support from family or friends. This home would include counseling, life skills work, personal growth work, and also help with the basic needs of food, clothing, and shelter. Gemma was promised by the City of Santa Cruz that if they raised $50,000 by the end of 2005 the City would match it.  Two weeks before the deadline, $3200 was collected and donated by the Bay LP participants, and Gemma qualified for the matching grant. Their contribution made a huge difference in the money Gemma has to work with. Be the light by getting involved – visit their website at www.gemmasantacruz.org
