Family Coaching – The New Frontier
Family Coaching is one of the fastest growing arenas for coaches working in the personal growth field. Today’s families are faced with a number of fresh challenges: increased work hours, day care and after-school activities for children, extended and blended family dynamics, senior-age adult care and more. Finding the right work/life balance, open and effective communication, maintaining values and a sense of purpose in our lives that work for all family members are key components of effective family coaching.
Coaching a family is a unique and challenging opportunity that requires the coach to fully understand the interrelated dynamics of all aspects of family living. In business, coaches work with clients around teamwork, dealing with positional power issues, competition, time management, communication and strategic goals. In a family, the same issues apply but at a much more personal level where the emotional stakes are high. Additionally, there are interpersonal expectations, parental and partnership concerns, normal child identity and development, outside influences and educational concerns in every family. The family coach must understand the interplay of all factors and have the skills and tools to focus the entire family toward a shared outcome.
